Coucouvanis (Author)

Parents of children with autism or other special needs frequently struggle with toilet training their child. Toileting a child with special needs is more difficult because there are often additional challenges such as communication difficulties, sensory issues, behavioral concerns, resistance to change, inability to generalize a newly learned skill, and the need for routine.

Using traditional toilet training books and methods are not always helpful because the autism population does not think the same way a neurotypical child does. The child with autism may not care about pleasing parents or receiving verbal praise. Because there may be significant developmental delays, the toileting process may not be started until after the age of four. Using a diaper to eliminate has been the routine for several years and this can be hard to change. Children's books to introducing toilet training may not be appropriate because the child is too big for a potty chair or using the potty chair then transitioning to the toilet becomes yet another change and obstacle in this process.

All of these concerns may feel insurmountable and overwhelming when making the decision to begin toilet training. Judith Coucouvanis has come to the rescue with her new book The Potty Journey: Guide to Toilet Training Children with Special Needs, Including Autism and Related Disorders that empowers parents and professionals with practical information to make this journey a success. I would recommend reading the book in its entirety first before starting toileting because Ms. Coucouvanis equips the reader with a plan and presents the overall picture for this process. She uses the concept of a journey/trip and all the things one would need to do to make the trip a successful one. It is these planning tips and manageable steps that make toileting "do-able".

One of the biggest quandaries parents face is not knowing when to start toileting. Judy outlines considerations when to begin toileting in the second chapter. She discusses mental age which is not the same as chronological age, the ability to remain dry for 1 - 2 hours at a time, and being over the age of four when bodily functions are more mature. It is also important that you as the parent are emotionally ready for this commitment which takes several weeks, and that there are no additional life stressors such as a move, divorce, job change, or major illness.

One key to successful toileting is using a team approach. Everyone who spends time with that child should be involved in the toileting process. Children with autism don't generalize from one situation to the next so for success to occur there has to be a consistent toileting routine and approach throughout the child's day which may unfold in several places.

The author introduces the Daily Progress Record (DPR) in chapter 3 which is the foundation of the toileting process. She provides lots of examples and a template in the appendix. She teaches how to practice toileting, use rewards, and supports the child's learning with visual examples. She dedicates two chapters to troubleshooting problems. The book is peppered with thoughts from parents and professionals who have gone through this journey. Their comments offer positive support and encouragement. The final chapter is dedicated for stories from those who have completed the toileting journey.

Ms.Coucouvanis also writes about creating independence with toileting - how to fade prompts and your presence in the bathroom. She also discusses bathroom use in other locations such as the school and public restrooms. The hidden curriculum rules for boys and girls public bathroom use are outlined. Most mothers are not aware of how different a men's public bathroom is from a women's.

There is a helpful appendix at the end which includes charts for determining toileting readiness, the Daily Progress Record, records for your team members (known as the travel crew), a checklist to prepare for this journey, suggested rewards, Sitting Practice Record, and a visual breakdown of the toileting steps.

The Potty Journey takes parents and professionals through the toileting journey which is a challenge but well worth the effort. Toileting with independence and confidence is a life-long skill; without this skill, a person's choices are limited and they are dependent on someone else for one of their most basic needs.

Number of Pages: 160

Dimensions: 0.4 x 8.9 x 5.9 IN

Illustrated: Yes

Publication Date: September 09, 2014

by Mary Wrobel (Author)

Toilet training can be a battleground for parents and children. Some children with ASDs are gifted; others struggle academically. Some are more introverted, while others try to be social. Some get ''''stuck'''' on things, have limited interests, or experience repeated motor movements like flapping or pacing (''''stims''''). The Survival Guide for Kids with Autism Spectrum Disorders covers all of these areas, with an emphasis on helping children gain new self - understanding and self - acceptance. Meant to be read with a parent, the book addresses questions (''''What's an ASD?'''' ''''Why me?'''') and provides strategies for communicating, making and keeping friends, and succeeding in school. Body and brain basics highlight symptom management, exercise, diet, hygiene, relaxation, sleep, and toileting. Emphasis is placed on helping kids handle intense emotions and behaviors and get support from family and their team of helpers when needed. The book includes stories from real kids, fact boxes, helpful checklists, resources, and a glossary. As a result of popular treatment methods, people with GI problems are mainly busy with endless changes in their diet and the daily use of probiotics and other supplements. These treatment programs are sometimes sprinkled with ideas of better chewing, more physical exercise and other lifestyle changes. In the long run, since there are no criteria for normal or good digestion, many of the recovered people will get the same and sometimes other symptoms some weeks or months later. There are also no books and internet resources that provide even a list of specific signs of normal (or ideal) digestive health. These signs do exist, and they include such factors that are virtually never mentioned in the medical literature or sources related to alternative medicine. Signs of perfect digestion A person with normal digestive health does not require any toilet paper due to the absence of soiling (i.e., no residue is left on the anus after a bowel movement). Also, bowel movements are regular, and the feces do not produce any odor and do not leave marks on the toilet bowl. If someone has inflammatory bowel disease, they always require use of toilet paper and the degree of soiling generally correlates with the severity of their digestive problem. Most ordinary people require toilet paper as well. This is an indicator of their poor GI health. A person with normal digestion is able to hold up to 1 liter (4.2 cups) of urine in the urinary bladder, while modern sources do not even mention frequent urination with reduced urinary volume as one of the key symptoms of active IBD. The volume or urine accurately reflects the state of the GI system and degree of inflammation in people with IBD. Normal digestion means that there is no need to regularly or perpetually consume pounds of yogurt, probiotics, and/or any other fermented foods due to the continuous presence of good bacteria in the gut since the healthy immune system does not allow pathogens to reside on the surface of the gut and form biofilms. All mentioned and other signs of good digestion relate to normalization of gut flora and the absence of pathological microbial films on the surface of the small intestine. This is another key topic that is rarely discussed. Formation of biofilms by pathogens is the norm in cases of inflammatory bowel disease. These biofilms prevent absorption of nutrients and pollute the body with toxins. Soiling means dominance of pathogens in the gut Soiling has a very simple cause directly related to biofilms. In fact, soiling indicates a dominance of common pathogens in the gut, such as Candida Albicans and H. Pylori. Biofilms are created by "sticky" pathogens, while good bacteria, which favor the absence of soiling, are unable to adhere to the surface of the gut. (The same sticky pathogens make one's stool greasy and leave marks on the walls of the toilet bowl.) Triggers of flare-ups Common triggers of GI flare-ups in people with IBD include chemical triggers (ranging from acids present in ordinary diets to spices and essential oils from toothpastes), mechanical, abdominal pressure due to poor posture, and many more. Tap water and most types of bottled water as well as non-organic foods are common triggers of flareups. The book provides a systematic review of these and many other hidden triggers and symptoms of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease since, without knowledge of these factors, it is impossible to heal the gut. With this knowledge and avoidance of triggers, most people with IBD can achieve no soiling (no need for toilet paper) an a few days and clinical remission in 1-2 months.

Number of Pages: 70

Dimensions: 0.17 x 9.02 x 5.98 IN

Publication Date: October 21, 2013

by Artour Rakhimov (Author)

This Crohn's Disease and Colitis Recovery Guide is based on the goal to achieve certain clear and specific signs of normal (or ideal) digestive health. Such signs of a clean gut are virtually never mentioned in the medical literature or sources and books related to alternative medicine. People with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis experience severe digestive dysbiosis with pathological microbial films on the linings of the large and small colons with following symptoms: - a heavy yellow or white coating on the tongue - frequent urination and reduced urinary volumes (less than 300 ml) - flatulence, burping, ear buzzing, and offensive fecal smell - use of large amounts of toilet paper due to excessive soiling. Someone with inflammatory bowel disease always require use of toilet paper, while the degree of soiling correlates with the severity of their digestive problem. Most people also require toilet paper. This is an indicator of their poor digestive and general health. While monitoring symptoms of abnormal digestion, a person can find out and address those triggers that cause dysbiosis. These triggers are analyzed in detail in Part 1 of this book series with the title "Crohn's Disease and Colitis: Hidden Triggers and Symptoms". Among common triggers of IBD are: - tap water, most types of bottled and mineral water - poor posture (including slouching and bending forward) - certain types of physical exercise that cause tension in abdominal muscles triggering acute digestive flare-ups - some sleeping positions - non organic foods - other chemical triggers that include essential oils (in chewing gums and toothpastes) and acids. This book is Part 2 from the same series, and it focuses on a detailed treatment guide for people with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis with the following goals: - normalization of the GI flora and natural elimination of biofilms and inflammation - achievement of a clean tongue (without any thick coating) - an ability to hold up to 1 liter (4.2 cups) of urine in the urinary bladder - elimination of flatulence, burping, ear buzzing, and offensive fecal smell - achievement of no soiling (i.e., no residue is left on the anus after a bowel movement) and regular bowel movements without marks on the toilet bowl. During recovery, it is common that a person with IBD experiences gradual improvements in relation to all symptoms at the same time. Vice versa, when making a mistake leading to GI exacerbation, all these symptoms worsen together (more flatulence, burping, and gas; stronger smell; more ear buzzing; reduced urinary volume and increased urination; more soiling; etc.). Achievement of these goals requires numerous lifestyle changes that relate to diet, chewing, posture, physical exercise, sleep, thermoregulation, breathing patterns, and avoidance of all triggers. Addressing these lifestyle factors creates conditions to heal the gut naturally. With this treatment guide and avoidance of triggers, most people with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis can achieve no soiling (no need for toilet paper) an a few days and clinical remission in 1-2 months.

Number of Pages: 112

Dimensions: 0.27 x 9.02 x 5.98 IN

Publication Date: October 21, 2013

by Leslie Patricelli (Author), Leslie Patricelli (Illustrator)

There comes a point in a toddler's life when going in one's diaper is only one possible option, and the question must be raised: Should I go in my potty?

With pitch-perfect humor and pacing, Leslie Patricelli follows the inner dialogue (sure to have little ones shouting responses) and hilarious actions of everyone's favorite Baby, winding up with an over-the-top look of surprise and delight that will have both parents and offspring laughing out loud. "I did it!"
Author Biography

Leslie Patricelli is the creator of a series of best-selling board books starring her adorable bald baby.
