Approximately one-third of those with CP have the subtype spastic diplegia-also known as bilateral spastic CP, or simply bilateral CP. An estimated 6 million worldwide have spastic diplegia. Until now, there has been no book focused on this condition to help this large group of people. This book focuses on the motor problems-problems with bones, muscles, and joints, and their impact on walking. The Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) is a five-level system that indicates the severity of the condition. This book is relevant to those at GMFCS levels I to III: those who are capable of walking independently or with a handheld mobility device. These three levels account for the majority of people with spastic diplegia.

The book addresses how spastic diplegia develops over the lifespan and explains the evidence-based, best-practice treatments. It empowers parents of young children, and adolescents and adults with the condition, to become better advocates and co-decision makers in the medical process. The focus of this optimistic, yet practical book is on maximizing activity and participation-living life to its fullest. Health care professionals, educators, students, and extended family members will also benefit from reading this book. Indeed, while this book focuses on spastic diplegia, much of what is addressed also applies to other forms of spastic CP at GMFCS levels I to III, namely hemiplegia and quadriplegia.

Written by Lily Collison, a parent of a son with spastic diplegia and a medical sciences graduate, in close collaboration with senior medical experts from Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare-a world-renowned center of excellence for CP treatment-this is an excellent, long-needed resource for spastic diplegia. _______________________________

'I highly recommend this book to people who have CP, parents, family members, and medical professionals.'-Hank Chambers, MD

'A must-read for parents and children with spastic diplegia, and if its guiding principles are followed, it will do much to ensure that their child reaches maturity with an optimal outcome.'-James R. I used my biped facility to play baseball with great enthusiasm but little skill. I walked thousands of school hallways and campuses as a student, then teacher, principal and superintendent. I walked out of Walpole (NH) Congregational Church with my new bride Lynn on my arm. I carried my baby daughter Emily. We walked through London's Piccadilly Circus, the Coliseum in Rome, the Eiffel Tower, Costa Rican Indian villages, Denali, Cozumel ruins and many Caribbean beaches. I hiked the Appalachian Trail with my wife, son, brother, niece, nephew and lots of my students and summer campers. And Dad. I walked all over the New England and Arizona trails with Dad. In my 61st year of life I walked into the neurosurgery pre-op center at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. I removed my clothes and got into the hospital gown. I laid down on a gurney, never to walk normally again. In a few hours I awoke from unsuccessful surgery on an intradural melanotic schwannoma at T-11 (about the level of my navel) inside my spinal cord. I was able to use my legs only to wiggle my toes weakly and feebly press my foot down as if on an imaginary car accelerator pedal. In the ensuing five years, I progressed from riding a gurney to walking at about 1/3 normal speed for men of my age with a cane and total attention to my jerky barely balancing legs for distances of up to half a mile and durations up to 45 minutes. This book shares what I, with the many who helped me, did to make a far greater recovery than any physician or physical therapist expected. Some of my physical rehabilitation may have specific relevance only to those with physical disabilities. All of my mental rehabilitation will have relevance to everyone. I have made a breakthrough with a paraplegic T10, in year 1984, who was told that there is no more help for him, after several years of therapy, and in only 10 hourly sessions, I had him stand up from the wheelchair and walk with my "hands on" method and technique. 1987, I worked on a quadriplegic C5-C6 and in several months he improved with his walking and reduced the spasticity in the body and legs. 1991, I worked with a paraplegic T5, whose legs were spastic and crippled after several years of no help from the previous therapy and in only several months I has him stand on his feet, and corrected the crippling. 1998, I worked on a quadriplegic complete C4-C5, and restored his spastic arms and hands, and he was able to do his homework at school. All of these spinal cord injured were told that there is no more help. I believe that many disabled people are mislead, as the above, including stroke, Parkinson, Muscular Dystrophy, ALS.Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Scleros. Husbands Should Not Break is a memoir that describes the challenges of adjusting to life with a disability. Shane is a theologian by trade, so the memoir explores the problem of pain--where is God when we suffer--weighing the sometimes-abstract categories of theology against the harsh realities of his experience. It is a brutally honest account, which does not shy away from the author's doubts and failures, and touches on rarely spoken-about topics, such as the impact of spinal cord injury upon sexuality. But while the narrative deals with sadness, it is a hopeful rather than depressing text, and often surprisingly funny, as it describes the comedic strangeness of struggling with a broken body. The memoir is an invitation into Shane's mind, providing readers with the opportunity to imagine what it might be like to experience the loss that comes with spinal cord injury and, thereafter, to think about life, loss, disability, and the possibility of happiness in the midst of the hardship and fragility of life.

Author Biography

Shane Clifton is Associate Professor of Theology at Alphacrucis College in Sydney. By the time he was a senior, Graef had won an award for his athletic ability. They are two ordinary people living their lives--Corby having spent the last twenty years in a wheelchair and Tess having dealt with less outwardly obvious struggles. Corby is a software developer and amateur public speaker on topics such as resilience and gratitude; he even does occasional sit-down comedy gigs! Tess juggles creative projects and side jobs and mostly tries to keep their lives from descending into chaos. They have spent years statistically proving that they are evenly matched at strategic board games. They also play video games, construct Lego sets, and host elaborate murder mystery parties. His childhood encompasses extremes of freedom, responsibility and constraint far beyond the experience of typical American children. His youth straddles not only two cultures but two eras, for modernization comes late to the Navajo reservation. His energy is boundless, his thirst for freedom tempered by devotion to family and a determination to succeed. At age 17, Gilbert is on his way to graduating high school at the top of his class when a tragic accident changes the course of his life. Gilbert is suddenly transported into the white man's world. First, a shocking awakening in a hospital where no one speaks his language. Then comes an arduous rehabilitation, of which the most painful part is coming to terms with his prognosis of irreversible quadriplegia. Here, one might expect the tale to wind down, but many adventures and achievements follow, as Gilbert goes on to earn his bachelor's degree, to travel and live independently in a pre-ADA world, and ultimately to become a powerful advocate and role model for people with disabilities on and off the reservation. Gilbert John's autobiography offers a rare intimate glimpse into tribal life, and a forthright take on Western medicine and culture from a Native American perspective. In these memoirs, Drew shares the wisdom he acquired while living with a high-level spinal cord injury in a wheelchair, describing a person transformed from a quiet, conforming teenager to a Don Quixote of the disability community. But this is not just the story of a remarkable person who fought for the civil rights of people with disabilities. His memoirs hold a universal message about our human capacity to achieve the extraordinary, the enormous capability to survive, flourish, and succeed in the world, if we can fully exploit what we already possess within ourselves. Conceivably, each one of us can emerge as a Don Quixote. It is commonly caused by congenital condition or spinal cord injury, which impacts the neural elements of the spinal canal. The area of the spinal canal which is influenced by paraplegia mainly covers lumbar, thoracic or sacral regions. Individuals with paraplegia can have wide range of disabilities, which require different treatments. The goal of rehabilitation is to assist the patient in regaining as much independence and functionality as possible. Physiotherapy can benefit in improving stretching, range of motion, transfer and strength skills. Majority of paraplegics are reliant on a wheelchair for their transportation. Activities of daily living (ADLs) can be difficult initially for persons having a spinal cord injury (SCI). Individuals having SCI may learn new skills and adapt old ones with the help of occupational therapists and physiotherapists, helping them to live self-sufficiently in the community. The topics covered in this book offer the readers new insights on the clinical characteristics, prevalence and treatment outcomes of paraplegia. It is a story of obstacles--physical, emotional, and psychic--overcome again, and again, and again. Whether riding a mule up a hillside in Iraq surrounded by mud-stained Kurdish refugees, navigating his wheelchair through intractable stretches of Middle Eastern sand, or auditioning to be the first journalist in space, John Hockenberry, ace reporter, is determined not only to bring back the story, but also to prove that nothing can hold him back from death-defying exploits. However, he will never be a poster boy for a Jerry Lewis telethon. A paraplegic since an auto accident at age nineteen, Hockenberry holds nothing back in this achingly honest, often hilarious chronicle that ranges from the Ayatollah's funeral (where his wheelchair is pushed by a friendly Iranian chanting "Death to all Americans"), to the problems of crip sex and the inaccessibility of the New York City subway system. In this immensely moving chronicle--so filled with marvelous storytelling that it reads like a novel--John Hockenberry finds that the most difficult journey is the one that begins at home, as he confronts the memories of his beloved one-armed grandfather, and finally meets his institutionalized Uncle Peter, whose very existence was long a secret buried in the family history.Moving Violations is a sometimes harrowing but ultimately joyful ride.

Author Biography

A two-time Peabody Award winner, John Hockenberry spent more than a decade with National Public Radio as a general assignment reporter, Middle East correspondent, and program host.
